Wiki North East is a contemporary archive website about the North East of England, covering Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham, Cleveland and North Yorkshire.
The site encourages users to add their own knowledge about the region to the existing digital archives of the Evening Chronicle, Evening Gazette, Journal, Sunday Sun and other publications from NCJ Media.
The aim is to create an on-going, up-to-date encyclopaedic reference for the North East of England, written by people from, or with a connection to, the region.
A wiki is a collaborative website or collection of webpages that allows users to create and edit content. The most well-known example of this is Wikipedia.
The NCJ Media digital archive dates back to 1995 and includes articles from publications
such as the Gateshead Post and the Pink. The archive is arranged into seven channels: Art & Culture, Business, Environment, History & Heritage, Regional Affairs, Science & Technology and Sport. Each category includes topics of People, Places and Events.
Wiki North East is not, at present, a picture archive.
You can find some excellent picture galleries drawn from
our archive material in the Remember When galleries
on
Chronicle Live and
Gazette Live
You can do so in three ways: by creating a topic, by adding an article to an existing topic, or by amending or editing an article for accuracy.
Anyone can contribute to the site, but you do need to register first. Once you have registered, whenever you login you will have an option called ‘My account’. Clicking to that page will give you a list of options, including ‘create a topic’.
From your account page, click on ‘create a topic’.
Select the appropriate channel from the drop-down menu (e.g. Middlesbrough AFC belongs to ‘Sport’; Newcastle Astronomical Society belongs to ‘Science & Technology’).
Once you have selected a channel, the editing page will appear.
From the drop-down menu, select the appropriate category of People, Places, Events and Other (e.g. Kielder Observatory belongs to ‘places’).
Enter a title for the topic – it should be concise and self-explanatory.
In the text box, enter your content for the topic. This should be a brief overview. If you want to write longer, detailed text on specific subjects under that topic, please create separate articles with their own headings. Click save.
Articles are added to existing topics. Find the topic you would like to add content to, either by using the search box at the top of every page, or by navigating from the channels.
The topic page will bring up the topic overview: directly underneath this text will be a link to ‘Add your content to this topic’. Click on this to bring up the edit page to create an article.
