Adam Wakenshaw

Adam Wakenshaw

ADAM Wakenshaw was born 9 June 1914 in Duke Street in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Wakenshaw, 28, a former pitman, had served with the 9th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry during the North Africa campaign.

He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his heroism in holding up the German advance with an anti-tank gun in the Western Desert in June 1942.

He is the only soldier from Newcastle to have been awarded a Victoria Cross for the Second World War.

A stained glass window designed by Cate Watkinson is dedicated in his honour at St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Newcastle.
