Gertrude Bell
GERTRUDE Bell was born in Washington, Co. Durham in 1868, and grew up in Redcar, Cleveland. She went to school in London and went on to read history at Oxford, at a time when university education for women was highly unusual. She is known for her travels through Persia and for her archaeological interests. She died in 1926.
